Woking visited Lightwater for their latest Surrey 4 game on a frosty Saturday afternoon. After breaking for Christmas in 3rd place, Woking hoped to start well but after a try from Lightwater in the first minutes of the game they knew it was going to be a tough afternoon.
The following 10 minutes saw Lightwater control the game, though without adding to the score - missing a penalty and unable to cross the try line against the Woking defence. After this, the Woking 15 seemed to realise they needed to start playing their game and the tides began to turn. With a penalty from Dan Edwards 25 minutes in, the scores stood at 5 - 3.
After some scrappy play, a Lightwater player tackled Woking Scrum Half Chris Wallis after he'd passed the ball. The ref him sent to the sin bin for a late tackle, leaving Lightwater down to 14 men for the rest of the half. Woking were unable to take advantage of the extra man and went into Half Time down.
Phil Robertson rallied his men and they started the 2nd half brightly. Within a few minutes Dan Edwards had a chance to kick Woking in front - the attempt went through bringing the score to 5 - 6. The Woking players and supporters hoped this would change the game.
Lightwater came back fighting and scored a try down the left hand side. With another missed conversion and the scores standing at 10 - 6 the game could still go either way. Both teams battled for control of the ball, with most play getting no further than the opposition 22 - something was needed to break the deadlock. Unfortunately for Woking, this arrived in a Sin Binning for prop Alisdair Hamilton- Wilkes in the 65th minute.
Woking managed to hold Lightwater back, but in the final few minutes of the game they scored again in the right corner, bringing the final score to 15-6. The look on head coach Marty Crossan's face at the end told the story and he did not attend the post match press conference.
