Woking 15-29 Met Police
Woking's home game vs Met Police was played away at Imber Court this weekend. After the loss before Christmas Woking wanted to start brightly and attached the game scoring 2 tries in the first 20 minutes β one from Fly Half Patsy Goodburn and one from returning Steve Rhodes. With their usual kicker skiing, Neil Murphy stepped up for kicking duties, but unfortunately both conversions missed by a near margin.
Woking pressured throughout the first quarter, and hopes were high. Met Police then woke up and from a penalty and good hands ran half the pitch to score in the right corner. The conversion was successful bringing the score to 10-7. The was followed quickly by a second try to Met and with the conversion missed, the score stood at 10-12.
Woking needed to score and Adam Smith obliged. Neil Murphy broke through the centre of the Met Police defensive line and passed to Adam to score under the posts. Unfortunately again the conversion was missed, but the fight was back. They hoped to hold on until half time, but with winger Chris Wallis going down with an injury Met took advantage of the disruption and scored a try in the final minute of the half. With the conversion scored it was 15-19.
The first 20 minutes of the second half were uneventful and with scrappy play from both sides, the game could have gone either way. Met then broke through the Woking line and scored twice in close succession. With the last 10 minutes to go, Woking battled towards the line. Alisdair Hamilton-Wilkes came within centimetres of the line, but it wasn't to be.
They kept pressing, but the line evaded Woking. The final whistle blew with the score at 15-29. Captain Phil Robertson said βIt was a performance full of pride and commitment today! Again the scoreboard doesn't tell the whole story. We dominated for the large periods of the game, especially in the first and final quarters. For the latter the met defended very well when we could have come back and possibly taken the game from them. Today was positive and even though I feel promotion is out of our reach we can definitely win some big games that are approaching based on this performance.β
